A boozy carnival party or a bad cold: almost all of us snore occasionally. Alcohol or a blocked nose are common triggers. However, if your snoring degenerates into regular night-time music, it’s time to visit the dentist. Especially if you or your partner notice pauses in breathing between snores.
How a dental splint helps against snoring
When we snore, our throat muscles and tongue relax too much, partially blocking the upper airways. This causes the air in our throat to vibrate, which produces the snoring sound. If the airways become completely blocked, breathing stops.
This is how the dental splint for snorers regulates your breathing:
- The snoring splint – also known as a protrusion splint in technical jargon – consists of one dental splint for the upper jaw and one for the lower jaw.
- The splint holds the lower jaw, tongue and soft palate forward during sleep. This opens the throat and keeps the throat muscles tense.
- The inhaled air flows less rapidly into the throat. There is no noisy fluttering of the soft palate.
How much does treatment with a snoring splint cost?
The cost of a protrusion splint varies. We always customise it for you individually: this ensures a perfect fit, and you won’t even notice the dental splint at night. Statutory health insurance funds cover the cost of the snoring splint in cases of proven obstructive sleep apnoea (OSAS). Otherwise, you will have to bear the costs yourself.
Whether your private (supplementary) insurance covers the cost of the splint depends on the tariff you have chosen.
We will be happy to advise you on the exact costs after an initial examination at our dental practice in Deutz, Cologne.
