That depends entirely on your lifestyle. If you drink a lot of coffee or tea, smoke or enjoy eating strongly coloured foods, your teeth will darken more quickly. The results of teeth whitening can last between six months and up to five years. Regular professional teeth cleaning will help your new tooth colour stay fresh for longer. Teeth whitening in Cologne: your path to brighter teeth
Everyone has a unique tooth colour, and very few people have creamy white, pearly white or snow-white teeth. Of course, we understand if you want brighter teeth.
At Dr. Ganss + Kollegen in Deutz, Cologne, we offer two different teeth whitening procedures:
- In-office bleaching is the fastest and most effective method of whitening your teeth. At our dental practice, we apply a highly concentrated bleaching gel and activate it with a special UV light. This usually gives you the desired result within two hours.
- With home bleaching, we will provide you with special bleaching trays and gel to take home with you. We will explain how to wear the trays with the gel in our practice. Bleaching gel for home use has a lower concentration than that used in the dentist’s practice. The process therefore takes several days to weeks.
Have you had root canal treatment and your tooth is turning dark? We would be happy to advise you on so-called internal bleaching for teeth that have undergone root canal treatment.

Teeth whitening – how it works
How exactly does teeth whitening work? Your appointment consists of several steps, which vary slightly depending on the method chosen:
- Examination: Your dentist will examine your teeth and gums to ensure that both are healthy. Before whitening, we will treat any cavities or inflamed gums.
- Preparation: Professional teeth cleaning removes discolouration and plaque for optimal results.
- Bleaching: During in-office bleaching, we protect your gums with a special gel. We then apply the bleaching gel to each tooth individually. We activate this using a UV lamp. We repeat this process up to three times. With home bleaching, you take your trays and the gel home with you. There, you can wear the bleaching trays at night for several days. We will, of course, show you how it works.
