Your dentist explains: What is CMD?
Craniomandibular dysfunction, or CMD for short – many people are now familiar with the term. But what does this diagnosis actually mean?
The term craniomandibular dysfunction comes from Latin. It defines a malfunction in the interaction between the skull (cranium), lower jaw (mandible) and the associated muscles and jaw joint:
- This imbalance can lead to a variety of symptoms. These include pain in the jaw area, headaches, ringing in the ears, neck tension or pain when chewing and speaking.
- There are many causes of CMD. In most cases, both psychological (such as stress) and functional (e.g. crooked teeth, muscle tension) factors are involved.
- At first glance, it is often unclear which of your symptoms are symptoms and which are causes. A crooked tooth can lead to neck tension. At the same time, emotional stress can cause tense jaw muscles.
At Dr. Ganss + Kollegen, we therefore take extra time to carry out a detailed diagnosis. In CMD therapy, we work on an interdisciplinary basis with other specialists, such as physiotherapists and orthopaedic surgeons.

Finally relaxed again: How CMD therapy brings your body back into balance
In order to diagnose CMD, we first need to understand your symptoms. That is why an important part of our therapy is a detailed consultation. Tell us about your everyday life:
- Do you work a lot while sitting down?
- Do you participate in physically demanding (contact) sports?
- Are you under stress?
All this information helps us to better classify your symptoms.
Comprehensive functional diagnostics
After our chat, we’ll check your teeth, jaw joint, and muscles:
- We check the mobility of your jaw and identify tense muscles.
- Are you a night-time grinder or clencher? Worn enamel or exposed tooth necks give us the answer.
- Faulty or poorly fitting dentures can also cause CMD symptoms. We can usually correct this quickly.
- We use special instruments to examine how mobile your jaw is and whether your upper and lower jaws fit together harmoniously.
- In some cases, we also take X-rays to get a better picture of the inside of your jaw.
Interdisciplinary CMD therapy
After the examination, we will discuss our findings and our treatment proposal with you. Many people find relief with a customised bite splint. This splint is usually worn at night. It relieves pressure on your jaw and relaxes the surrounding muscles.
Physiotherapy can help with severely tense muscles. Therapists release blockages and show you how to relax and strengthen your muscles in the long term.
