Peri-implantitis: What does this mean for your implant?
Similar to periodontitis – inflammation of the periodontium – the tissue around your implant becomes inflamed. The sooner your dentist treats this inflammation, the greater the chance of saving your implant.
How can I recognise peri-implantitis?
Peri-implantitis often begins gradually and is initially painless. Watch out for these early symptoms:
- Swollen and reddened gums
- Bad breath that persists even after thorough brushing
- Bleeding gums in the area of the implant
This is a preliminary stage of peri-implantitis. Dentists refer to it as mucositis. At this stage, the inflammation can still be treated effectively. In most cases, thorough professional cleaning of the implant surfaces is sufficient to curb the mucositis.
If left untreated, the disease will continue to progress. Symptoms include:
- Receding gums
- Festering areas
- Pain in the jawbone or dentures
