Why does a tooth root become inflamed?
From the outside, our teeth appear strong and robust. However, beneath the outer enamel lies the sensitive interior of the tooth (the pulp), which is well protected. If bacteria penetrate the enamel through holes or cracks, they can cause inflammation.
There are various reasons why this happens, such as:
- Caries: If left untreated, caries can penetrate into the interior of the tooth and cause infections there.
- Trauma: A blow to the tooth can cause damage to the enamel and pulp of the tooth.
- Wear: Excessive grinding and clenching can wear down the enamel to such an extent that germs can penetrate the interior of the tooth.

Imagine the inside of your tooth as a stalactite cave. Your tooth root – some molars even have several roots – branches out into tiny canals deep into the jawbone. This requires a delicate touch, high-quality technical aids and a great deal of experience:

Where does the term ‘endodontics’ actually come from?
“Endodont” – from Greek – essentially means “that which is inside the tooth”. Endodontics (also endodontology) is the field of dentistry that focuses on diseases inside the tooth. This includes nerves, blood vessels and lymph vessels.

Precision and safety: Your dentist relies on endodontics with the surgical microscope
Precision is the key to successful root canal treatment. That is why we follow a fixed procedure.
This is what your treatment could look like:
- Anaesthesia and rubber dam:
First, we will administer an effective anaesthetic. For the treatment to be successful, we must keep the area around the tooth completely dry and sterile. To do this, we stretch a highly elastic rubber sheet (rubber dam) over the oral cavity so that only the tooth is exposed. - Measuring root canals:
The first step is to carefully open your tooth. We then locate the individual root canals and measure their length. We use an electric measuring device for this. This ensures that we can see and treat even the smallest branches perfectly. - Removing inflamed tissue:
Under a high-magnification microscope, we remove the inflamed tissue using ultra-fine and highly flexible files. We then disinfect the root canals with special rinses. We activate these using an ultrasound device. This ensures that the rinses also reach areas that are difficult to access. - Filling the canals:
To prevent new bacteria from accumulating, we fill the root canals with a special material. - Close the tooth:
Finally, we give your tooth new strength: either with a filling or with a (partial) crown.
How long does root canal treatment take?
A root canal treatment usually takes one to two hours. In complicated cases, it may take longer or we may need more sessions. After an initial diagnosis, we can give you a more accurate prognosis.
How long does the pain last after root canal treatment?
In the best case scenario, you will be pain-free after the treatment. In rare cases, you may experience slight pain or a feeling of pressure when the local anaesthetic wears off. This should subside within a few days. You can cool the area, and we will be happy to recommend suitable painkillers for the first few days.

Microscopic endodontics: Who covers the costs?
Statutory health insurance covers basic root canal treatment. Unfortunately, modern tools for microscopic endodontics are not included in the range of services covered by statutory health insurance.
This applies, for example, to the use of surgical microscopes and electrical length measurement. However, in our experience, these significantly increase the success of the treatment.
If you have private supplementary dental insurance, this will cover most of your additional costs in the best case scenario.
